Proteas regroup after Afridi onslaught

Unbeaten South Africa were left with a 150 target to reach their first World Twenty20 final after an explosive half century from Shahid Afridi was the highlight of the Pakistan innings at Trent Bridge.

All-rounder Afridi made 51 off 34 balls but Pakistan stuttered after he fell, failing to build on a promising start.

After Pakistan skipper Younus Khan won the toss and elected to bat, Kamran Akmal began positively by twice cutting Dale Steyn for four in the opening over.

But Shahzaib Hazan failed to trouble the scorers before falling to the second delivery from Wayne Parnell, mistiming a pull to Roelof van der Merwe who took a fine catch running back from mid-on.

Akmal looked in good form and collected two boundaries at Parnell's expense before lofting Dale Steyn for six over long off.

But, after making 23 off only 12 balls, he also fell victim to a mistimed pull - off Steyn - and Albie Morkel took a far more comfortable catch at mid-on to leave Pakistan on 28 for two.

Shahid Afridi twice pulled Jacques Kallis for four in his opening over which cost 11 runs but, after scoring 43 runs from the first five overs, only 25 came off the next five as the boundaries dried up.

It needed a typical onslaught from Afridi to put some momentum back into the Pakistan innings and it was Johan Botha who bore the brunt of the onslaught.

Afridi carved the spinner through cover for three successive fours and, when Botha switched around the wicket, he was dabbed away for another boundary.

Afridi reached his half century off 32 balls with eight fours but added only a single before perishing to the first ball from JP Duminy with AB De Villiers taking the catch at short midwicket.
