Quartet take advice over Tevez

West Ham's relegation rivals have told the Premier League they believe the London club are still breaching rules by playing Carlos Tevez.

Charlton, Fulham, Sheffield United and Wigan have confirmed they are taking legal advice following the Premier League's decision to fine West Ham over the signings of Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

They are calling for a new independent commission to be set up to deal with the Hammers.

The four met in central London on Friday and have sent a joint letter to Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore claiming that there continues to be third-party influence over Tevez - the reason that West Ham were fined £5.5million last week - because the Hammers are still negotiating with his owners Media Sports Investment.

The four clubs believe the Hammers should have been punished with a points deduction instead.

The letter to Scudamore says: "We are extremely concerned that WHUFC remain subject to that [third party] influence and as such there is a continuing serious breach by WHUFC of FAPL rule B13."

It adds: "It is incumbent on the FAPL to convene a commission and proceed against WHUFC in relation to this very serious matter."

The Premier League have also taken legal advice however, and have been told their position is unassailable.

The League's position is that it is entirely up to the independent commission to decide on the punishment, and that if they had any influence over the decision it would be a conflict of interest.

They would argue the commission had a full range of sanctions available to it, and that Premier League rules do not state what the punishment should be for such rule breaches.
