Raikkonen leaves Hamilton in his wake

Kimi Raikkonen showed that Ferrari will be tough to beat this weekend by leaving Lewis Hamilton and the rest in his wake in second practice for the British Grand Prix.

The Finn blasted around a blowy Silverstone in a time of one minute 20.639 seconds ahead of his team-mate Felipe Massa, who was 0.499secs behind.

Championship leader Hamilton could not better fourth place for McLaren, a touch over seven tenths of a second adrift after setting an identical lap time to a resurgent Ralf Schumacher in the Toyota.

World champion Fernando Alonso was again in his McLaren team-mate's slipstream in sixth, while Jarno Trulli's Toyota was fifth.

Cars took to the track from the moment the session started in an attempt to get in some dry-weather running as dark clouds hung low in the air.

Alonso and Hamilton traded fastest laps in the opening 15 minutes, before Raikkonen and then Massa went quickest.

Raikkonen, though, demonstrated the speed he showed in winning the French Grand Prix last weekend by putting in the fastest lap of the weekend so far to move conclusively top, where he was to stay.

McLaren concentrated on longer runs on heavy fuel in preparation for Sunday's race for much of the session, but Hamilton's lap from the day's first practice was the second quickest of the weekend, albeit half a second slower than Raikkonen's benchmark.

Nico Rosberg maintained his promise from the morning practice session in seventh and his Williams team-mate Alex Wurz was eighth.

Mark Webber's Red Bull wound up ninth and Britain's Anthony Davidson an impressive 10th for Super Aguri. Fresh from having his Red Bull contract renewed for 2008, Briton David Coulthard set the 14th quickest time.
