Rain delay at Old Trafford

England's second Twenty20 international against Australia was delayed because of rain at Old Trafford.

Play was due to begin at 7pm but at 6.15pm it was announced that the umpires would instead inspect the pitch at that time.

Thunderstorms hit Manchester in the afternoon causing puddles on the outfield, but officials hope to see some play after Sunday's first Twenty20 game was ended prematurely by rain.

Having re-inspected the pitch, the umpires resolved to assess conditions once again at 7.45pm.

The bowlers' run-ups appeared to be causing most concern, with groundstaff applying sawdust to the affected areas.

A reduced-overs contest may yet be the result, with five overs per side the minimum allowable.
