Rain hits England preparations

England's preparations for the first Test in India were hit by wet weather on Saturday in the United Arab Emirates.

Heavy rain prevented the players leaving for practice until after lunch and cut their scheduled workout for the day in half.

The 38-strong entourage - which includes 13 of the original Test party and 10 performance squad members - were due to head to nets at 9.30am, but their departure was put back to 1pm, in the hope the run-ups at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium would be fit for practice in the middle.

England's players returned their thoughts to cricket on Friday as their bosses headed off to Chennai.

Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, and Sean Morris, chief executive of the Professional Cricketers' Association, accompanied the touring party here, then travelled on to India to make security assessments for the first Test venue and will return here on Sunday evening.

The England team, who went home last Saturday following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and have set up a training camp here until a definitive decision is made on returning to the subcontinent, are breaking unusual ground by preparing for a Test in a different country to that in which it is being played.

A definitive announcement on whether the Test party will resume the tour of the subcontinent is expected late on Sunday.
