Spurs are third bottom of the Premier League after a woeful start to the season and Ramos, who built an impressive reputation with Sevilla, has been brought in to turn things around, but he does not intend to charge into White Hart Lane all guns blazing.

And despite being labelled as something of a disciplinarian Ramos intends to build bridges not burn them, saying: "I maintain a friendship with players in all of the teams I have been in. I think that's important."

Ramos has a well publicised love affair with the English game and he has admitted coaching in the Premier League is the realisation of a dream. In an interview with free Spanish newspaper Metro, Ramos claimed coaching in England meant more than winning the Champions League or the World Cup.

"Sincerely, the English league has always been my dream and coaching in England is the realisation of that dream," he said.

He identified Arsenal's Arsene Wenger as the manager he most admires, adding: "If I had to pick one coach it would be Wenger."

The new Spurs head coach will be unveiled at a press conference this afternoon along with his new backroom staff, Marcos Alvarez - who worked with Ramos at Sevilla - and 39-year-old former Spurs midfielder Gus Poyet.

Poyet left Elland Road after Leeds agreed an undisclosed compensation package with Tottenham.

A Leeds statement read: "The club would like to thank Gus for his efforts over the past 12 months and wishes him every success in his new role. He leaves with the best wishes of everyone connected with the club."

The ex-Chelsea midfielder Poyet, who retired as a player after three years at White Hart Lane in 2004, has been an integral part of Leeds' unbeaten start to the season as Dennis Wise's side look to challenge for promotion despite being hit by a 15-point deduction.
