Ramos in talks over new Sevilla deal

Sevilla will re-open contract talks with coach Juande Ramos at the end of the Spanish season after he was linked with the vacant manager's position at Manchester City.

City have been linked with Ramos after their previous target, former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, was appointed Juventus coach yesterday.

Ramos has helped turn Sevilla into one of Europe's leading sides during his two years in charge - including winning back-to-back UEFA Cup titles and a Sevilla spokesman said: "He is in discussions with the club in order to get another contract."

The 52-year-old's current contract runs through to 2008 and although he could leave this summer if his buy-out clause is paid, Sevilla are looking to tie him down to a new deal.

City are the latest club reported to be interested in Ramos and although the coach admitted in March that he liked British football and would not rule out managing there some time in the future, he also insisted he hoped to remain at Sevilla for "a long time".

The Sevilla spokesman added: "At this moment, Juande publicly always says that he is happy here. He wants to continue and is waiting until after the league and cup to get a meeting with the president in order to make the arrangements for a new contract."

Sevilla, whose only previous Primera Liga title came in 1946, are currently third in the league standings, two points behind leading pair Real Madrid and Barcelona heading into the final two games of the season.

Sevilla also have the Copa del Rey final to look forward to, where they will face Getafe on June 23.

"When he talks about the future he always says 'at this moment I work for Sevilla, I am happy here, I am not thinking about change. I think that I will continue at Sevilla next season. But anyway the most important thing now is the end of the league and the cup final and later we will talk about the future'," the spokesman added.

Ramos took charge of Sevilla in 2005 and led the club to their first European title last summer when they won the UEFA Cup, which they retained last month by beating Espanyol in Glasgow.
