Rangers strike deal for young Claret

Rangers are poised to sign Kyle Lafferty from Burnley in a deal worth in excess of £3million after agreeing terms with the Coca-Cola Championship club.

The 20-year-old Northern Ireland striker had also been interesting Celtic, however Rangers are on the brink of making Lafferty their third striker signing of the summer, after securing deals for Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka.

They will pay an initial £3million, then a further £250,000 based on appearances. Alan Gow, 25, will also move to Burnley as part of the deal.

The former Falkirk forward failed to make an impact at Rangers after joining last summer, and will discuss personal terms with Burnley.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle told the club's official website: "We have received a very good offer from Rangers - a deal worth close to £4million when you include Alan (Gow), who has been offered to us in return as part of the package.

"Ultimately, from the fans' point of view, Kyle wanted to leave the club after saying he felt it was time to move on."

The signing of Lafferty, who is expected to have a medical on Tuesday, will take Rangers' summer spending above the £6million mark.

The youngster is 6ft 4in tall and scored five goals in 40 games for Burnley last season.

His imminent arrival inevitably casts some doubt over the future of the strikers who helped Rangers clinch a domestic cup double.

Kris Boyd, Daniel Cousin, Jean-Claude Darcheville and Nacho Novo were alternated in manager Walter Smith's team last season.
