Ratchford lands surprise England spot

The 21-year-old utility player began the season as a virtual unknown, with only four Super League appearances to his name, but emerged as the shining light in the Reds' difficult first season back in the top flight.
Ratchford played in Salford's last 22 matches, filling most positions in the back division but taking over from the Warrington-bound Richie Myler at scrum half for the last month of the season.
Myler, who scored a record 30 points in England's 66-12 win over France in June, is also among the 13 players named by Smith from the clubs who failed to reach the Super League play-offs.
Smith has included four players from his Warrington club while teenage winger Tom Briscoe is one of two representatives from Hull.
The 19-year-old, who was earlier this year named in the England elite training squad, recovered from a broken ankle to play in Hull's last four matches of the season.
The Warrington trio of Adrian Morley, Mickey Higham and Ben Westwood, Bradford centre Paul Sykes and Wests Tigers second rower Gareth Ellis are survivors from the World Cup while Danny Tickle (Hull) and Gareth Carvell (Warrington) are uncapped.
Carvell has represented Wales in the past but switched his allegiance to England last year and was only denied a World Cup spot by injury.
Train-on squad: S Burgess, P Sykes (both Bradford), T Briscoe, D Tickle (both Hull), M Higham, G Carvell, A Morley, B Westwood (all Warrington), T Clubb, L McCarthy-Scarsbrook (both Harlequins), S Ratchford, R Myler (both Salford), G Ellis (Wests Tigers).
