King, whose last strike came against Redknapp's Portsmouth on December 12, 2005, set Tottenham on the road to a 2-0 victory over West Ham, before Jamie O'Hara fired home from distance to seal the win.

"Ledley is a fantastic player. He has been unfortunate that his knee is a massive problem," said Redknapp. "(Sunday) was the first morning he came out training. He trained for 15 minutes and then came over and his knee was hurting him and it was swollen."

He added: "It is like that every week for him. He can't train all week. The first time we see him is the day before a game when he comes out and tries to get himself going again.

"It is such a shame for such a talented boy that he has a knee like that, that stops him playing all the time and doing what he wants to do."

Redknapp admitted King is unlikely to play in next weekend's game against Manchester United, but he is confident Spurs have enough cover in the shape of Michael Dawson and Vedran Corluka.

"It is doubtful he will figure against Manchester United. I have to be careful with him - if he does play two games in a week and his knee blows up he could be out for a long time," said Redknapp.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola felt his side deserved a penalty when Benoit Assou-Ekotto appeared to handle the ball in the area when Spurs were 1-0 up.

He said: "It was a clear penalty when it was 1-0. The referee is a human being, he can make mistakes. Unfortunately for us it was a disappointing game because it was one we all wanted to win.

"I understand the fans' frustration. We gave everything today to make them happy," said Zola. "It is not as easy situation for us, we know that. We will be working even harder than we have been. We won't panic."
