Redknapp launches spending spree

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has indicated the arrival of defender Sylvain Distin on a free transfer from Manchester City is merely the start of his summer spending.

Redknapp has now set his sights on Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari in a £7million club-record switch from Italian side Udinese while he is also set to further his interest in Newcastle reject Titus Bramble, Charlton's Icelandic star Hermann Hreidarsson and Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka.

He admitted: "I like them all and they are all possibles. We've got to keep investing in our squad. We did a miracle to finish ninth in the Premiership last season with the players we had. They all performed to their maximum but it will be tougher than ever next season when Sunderland and Birmingham come up with major backers."

Redknapp is adamant he will keep Sol Campbell, last season's major scoop, despite defenders figuring prominently on his wish list.

"Sol is going nowhere but we are looking to improve in all areas and that takes investment," he added. "We have money to spend and the chairman here is ambitious but if there is quality to be had from more free transfers I'll go for them."

Redknapp is delighted to recruit Frenchman Distin, 29, even on the £40,000-a-week wages which have been reported.

He said: "When I inquired about him a year ago his price was £5million. So now that he's a free agent I think it is a great bit of business for us. He's strong and powerful, an amazing signing. Most of all he has lightning pace."

The 29-year-old, who joined City from Paris St Germain five years ago after a loan spell with Newcastle, was not slow to put the knife into the Eastlands club.

Despite reports he was offered the biggest new contract in City history, Distin insisted: "I don't think they really tried (to keep me). In five years I saw a lot of good players come and go, especially the best ones like Nicolas (Anelka) and Shaun (Wright-Phillips).

"For me, if you are going to be ambitious and push for Europe you have to keep your best players. I had a good relationship with Stuart Pearce when he was manager. But I didn't really see the club's ambition. There is talk of a takeover now and things might change but I couldn't hang around any longer and made the decision to go."
