Reds reveals Heinze legal bid

The Reds had tabled a bid - reported to be almost £7million - for Heinze which was dismissed out of hand by the Barclays Premier League champions, with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson adamant Heinze would not be leaving Old Trafford. However, reports later surfaced that the Argentina defender's representatives could seek a resolution to the impasse through the courts.
Benitez said: "We made the offer and they rejected it and the lawyers are working on it. We have to wait. We're still trying to push the deal through. He's a player we like, he's a good player."
Ferguson last week poured scorn on any suggestion he might allow the former Paris St Germain player to leave for his club's bitterest rivals.
He told PA Sport: "I can assure you, Liverpool will not be getting Gabriel Heinze.
"We can put that to bed right now and we have done so. We have had a couple offers for him and we have turned them down."
It later emerged that Heinze had a letter signed by chief executive David Gill promising he could leave if United received a bid in excess of £6million - a figure Benitez is thought to have topped.
His representatives were reported to be considering legal action to push through the controversial deal - the first between the two clubs since Phil Chisnall moved to Anfield in 1964 - and it appears the Reds are also now willing to go to court to get their man.
Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun among others as they look to bridge the gap to both United and Chelsea.
But Torres, who was reputed to have cost around £20million to prise from Atletico Madrid, insisted it was not just down to him to fire Liverpool to the Premier League title and revealed he had set no targets for his first season in English football.
