Redskins confirm Taylor death

The Washington Redskins have confirmed that safety Sean Taylor died early Tuesday after being shot in the leg on Monday at his suburban Miami residence.

Taylor, 24, had emergency surgery which lasted nearly six hours to repair a severed femoral artery.

An announcement on the club's official website said: "The family of Sean Taylor has notified the Redskins that Taylor passed away Tuesday morning at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami."

The All-Pro was shot in the leg by an intruder attempting to break into his home in Palmetto Bay. The bullet struck the femoral artery, causing the star defensive back to lose a great deal of blood.

According to family and friends there was hope on Monday evening that Taylor would survive when, hours after surgery, he squeezed a doctor's hand and made facial expressions.

Taylor's attorney, Richard Sharpstein, told the Washington Post website the death had been "a ridiculous, unnecessary tragedy".

In an interview with CNN, Sharpstein said the player's father, Pedro Taylor, "was overwrought with grief and called me to tell me that Sean was with God..."

Redskins coach Joe Gibbs had addressed the media on Monday afternoon, saying his team has been stunned by the news of the shooting.

"For all of us here, we're obviously in shock," a misty-eyed Gibbs had said. "I know I can't put it in words. I know I wouldn't do a very good job of explaining to you all how we feel - I know all of our fans out there are praying.

"All of us are emotional right now, caught up in it. All of us are praying for the absolute best for Sean and his family."
