Reid: Celtic is a part of me

Former Home Secretary John Reid claims the offer to become Celtic chairman was one of the few proposals that could have prompted his decision to quit politics.

The Labour MP, who was officially appointed on Monday after being endorsed by shareholders at Celtic's AGM, quit the Cabinet earlier this year - but then announced his decision to leave Parliament at the next general election after being offered the chair.

"What I had to consider is it effectively meant me giving up my political career," he said. "It meant me stepping down from Cabinet, stepping down from Parliament - that was naturally a wrench for me. There are very few things, apart from my family, that would make me do that, but one of them was the chance to be part of Glasgow Celtic Football Club."

Reid told a story of how he was asked in an interview earlier this year if he would choose his seat at Celtic Park or the Cabinet if he was forced to give up either one.

"And I said, 'No question, I would choose my seat at Celtic Park'," the politician said. "And I would do that because it has been part of me virtually since birth and will be part of me long after I leave Cabinet politics."
