Renault scandal worries Stewart

Sir Jackie Stewart has again expressed his fears for the future of Formula One following the latest scandal to damage the sport.

Renault have decided not to dispute the allegations made by the FIA, that they conspired with former driver Nelson Piquet Jnr to cause a crash in last year's Singapore Grand Prix. As a consequence, Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds have left their positions as team principal and executive director of engineering.

Although three-times former world champion Stewart feels on this occasion he is in "no position to judge" the Renault case, the Scot is deeply concerned over the harm being done again to F1's image, saying: "What I do know is that there is something fundamentally rotten and wrong at the heart of Formula One. Never in my experience has F1 been in such a mood of self-destruction."

He added: "Millions of fans are amazed, if not disgusted, at a sport which now goes from crisis to crisis with everyone blaming everyone else.

"There is a nervousness and fear within the teams, which is not healthy.

"There is no respect or trust for the individuals, or the institutions that are meant to regulate and govern the sport."

Not for the first time, and not withstanding the presidential elections due to take place on October 23 when Max Mosley stands down after 12 years in office, Stewart is demanding change.

"There needs to be a fundamental reform of all the structures of governance and management of F1, from both a regulatory and commercial standpoint," insisted Stewart.

"Unless proper leadership is established soon within F1 at every level, the commercial sponsors will walk away and the sport will be seriously damaged for years to come."
