Robbie in Reds pledge

Robbie Paul has signed a two-year contract with relegated Salford and vowed to play for them in Super League in 2009.

The 31-year-old Paul, who is among a handful of players to appear in all 12 seasons of Super League, will play for the Reds under Shaun McRae in National League One in 2008 after confirming his departure from Huddersfield, and insists he is not yet ready to hang up his boots just yet.

"I could have retired happily but I still have a hunger and passion for this game," he said. "The desire to bash people and be bashed is burning stronger than ever. I want to help return this club to its former glory."

Paul had been linked with moves to National League clubs Doncaster and Celtic Crusaders but insisted he had not received an offer from Catalans Dragons, who are looking to replace Stacey Jones, and flatly refused to consider a move to rugby union.

Paul says he sought advice from his father and older brother Henry - who is having another season with Harlequins in 2008 - about his future and is confident he has made the right choice.

Salford, who also announced a new three-year contract for club captain Malcolm Alker, hope to move into a state-of-the-art stadium in 2010 and are confident of securing a Super League license for 2009.

"It wasn't a big decision," said Paul. "This club has an exciting future and I want to be part of it. There were a couple of other offers on the table but none that were right for me."
