Roberts set for tough fifth gold bid

Swimmer David Roberts faces a battle to add to his Beijing bounty of four gold medals after Great Britain's men's 4x100 metres medley relay team squeezed through to Monday night's Paralympics final at the National Aquatics Center.

The 28-year-old from Pontypridd won his 11th Paralympic gold in the men's S7 50m freestyle on Sunday night to equal Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson's haul.

However, Roberts faces a difficult task to add his fifth gold of the Games after he and team-mates Sean Fraser, Sam Hynd and Graham Edmunds qualified seventh fastest for the men's 34-point medley relay with a time of four minutes 34.17 seconds.

Jim Anderson was the fastest qualifier for the men's S2 50 metres freestyle as he seeks to defend his title.

Anderson, who won four golds in Athens, has one silver and two bronze so far in his fifth Games.

Robert Welbourn was the fastest qualifier for the men's S10 400m freestyle.

The 21-year-old from Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, finished in 4:18.19 to take lane four for the final.

Eleanor Simmonds qualified for the women's S6 50m freestyle final. The 13-year-old double Paralympic champion, having already won the 100m and 400m freestyle, was joined by team-mates Natalie Jones and Liz Johnson in the final.

Danielle Watts qualified for the women's S2 50m backstroke final, while Fran Williamson was second quickest in qualification for the women's S3 equivalent.

Anthony Stephens reached the men's S5 50m freestyle final, but Sascha Kindred and Matt Whorwood did not reach the final of the men's S6 event.
