The south coast county's failure to reach 300 runs in the first innings of their match against Nottinghamshire means they join Worcestershire in Division Two next season.

After three titles in the last seven seasons, it is a serious blow for Sussex, and Robinson told Sky Sports News: "It (relegation) hasn't happened to this club for a while, we've had a good run of success. We've got to take stock but initially it hurts your pride."

He added: "We've won the championship three times in recent years but last season we only avoided going down by one point.

"We got out of jail last year but haven't been able to rectify the things which needed doing over the winter."

Sussex's relegation was sealed on Thursday after four wickets from Nottinghamshire seamer Andre Adams helped bowl out the visitors for 243.

That means Roses rivals Lancashire and Yorkshire, together with Hampshire, are safe from the threat of relegation.
