Robinson determined to return

Jason Robinson insists he has not given up hope of making a dramatic World Cup return for England.

It was feared Robinson's tournament - and therefore his glittering career - would be ended by the hamstring injury that forced him to limp out of Friday's Pool A defeat to South Africa, but the wing, who scored a try in the 2003 World Cup final, is determined to get himself fit for the latter stages of England's defence.

"By no means have I yet given up playing again in this World Cup," Robinson said in the Mail on Sunday.

The 33-year-old, who will retire from all rugby after the tournament, revealed the justification for his positive outlook.

"I've never even tweaked a hamstring in the past so that might have something to do with why I am still optimistic, still positive that I can play a further part in this World Cup," he said.

Robinson accepts the injury may have been the result of the amount of defensive work he was forced to perform on Friday night, with England completely outclassed by the Springboks.

"I suppose the injury might have had something to do with the fact I was very fatigued," he said.

He recalled the incident, which occurred midway through the second half, saying: "We seemed to have a bit of an overlap when I took a pass from Andy Farrell.

"As I got hold of the ball, I made a second burst but, as I began to get into my stride, I felt a sharp pain in my hamstring."

Robinson's further participation will depend on the outcome of an MRI scan on the problem. England are set to reveal the results on Monday.
