Robinson set for race back home

Great Britain's Dan Robinson was satisfied with his performance in an amazingly quick Olympic marathon on Saturday.

Robinson finished 24th as Kenya's Sammy Wanjiru clocked an Olympic record of two hours six minutes 32 seconds to claim gold ahead of Morocco's Jaouad Gharib and Tsegay Kebede from Ethiopia.

Robinson deliberately stuck to his own schedule as Wanjiru blasted through the first five kilometres in 14mins 52secs despite the heat and humidity.

The Commonwealth bronze-medallist was 74th at that point, but gradually lifted himself through the field to a respectable position.

"They went off so quickly in the first kilometre I deliberately backed off the pace," said Robinson.

"But I always thought more athletes would start coming back and they did."

Robinson, who clocked 2:16.14, added: "I'm a little disappointed not to make the top 20, but you can only do what you can.

"Maybe I didn't get my pacing quite right, but I'm satisfied with the run."

Now the 33-year-old Stroud runner is aiming to get back home as quickly as possible for the birth of his child, which was expected on Saturday.
