Robredo crashes out in Hamburg

Tommy Robredo's defence of his Hamburg Masters title came to a premature end when he was knocked out of the tournament on Tuesday.

The sixth-seeded Spaniard was upset by countryman Nicolas Almagro 6-7 (1/7) 6-2 6-4 in their second-round meeting.

It was the first meeting between the two countrymen, with Almagro advancing past the second round of a tournament for the first time in four attempts.

Even if he had been able to beat Almagro, Robredo's title bid would have been a testing one as he was on course to face the hottest player on the ATP Tour, Rafael Nadal, in the semi-finals. The second-seeded Nadal extended his tour-record winning streak on clay to 77 matches and captured his 13th consecutive tournament on the surface at the Rome Masters last week.

The Spaniard will open on Wednesday against compatriot Oscar Hernandez, who posted a 6-3 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 victory over German Benjamin Becker in one of Tuesday's numerous first-round matches.

Another player to get an opening-round bye was world number one Roger Federer. A three-time champion in Hamburg, Federer is looking to rebound from an upset loss to Filippo Volandri in the third round at Rome last week.

Also on Tuesday, seventh seed Ivan Ljubicic needed to rally against Florent Serra of France in their second-round match before posting a 4-6 6-2 6-2 win. Ljubicic, who has reached three finals this season including a win at Doha in January, will next face 12th seed David Ferrer of Spain.

Ferrer bounced Sweden's Robin Soderling 1-6 6-3 6-2, in the only other second-round match.

In the only other first-round match involving a seeded player, Florian Mayer of Germany upset 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4 2-6 7-6 (7/5). Mayer will next face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who topped Germany's Tobias Summerer 6-1 7-6 (7/5).

The 1998 French Open champion Carlos Moya rolled past American Mardy Fish 6-0 6-3. The Spaniard's next opponent will be 10th seed Tomas Berdych, who won his first-round match on Monday.
