Robson is favourite succeed the recently-departed Neil Warnock, who resigned following the Blades' relegation to the Coca-Cola Championship last weekend.
Robson told Sky Sports News: "I said from when I left West Brom in October that I'd like to get back into the game. I enjoy the management side and the coaching of the players. Sheffield United are a big club and that's the type of challenge that I would be looking for."
Former England captain Robson has been out of management since leaving The Hawthorns early in the 2006-07 campaign.
Robson has experience of winning promotion having guided Middlesbrough to the top flight in 1995 and, after a relegation, 1998.
He successfully kept West Brom in the Premiership in 2005 but they were relegated last year and Robson left the club after a disappointing start to the next campaign.
