In the evening, reigning UK Champion Shaun Murphy got off to a flyer in his last-16 clash against Mark King with two centuries in the first two frames to establish a lead he never looked like surrendering.
Playing with tremendous fluency, Murphy moved to within one frame of victory and responded to King's gutsy 56 with a 58 clearance to the black to wrap up a well-deserved 5-2 victory.
In the evening's third match, Anthony Hamilton scored a 136 break as he took the last three frames in a row to claim a commanding 5-2 win over Michael Judge.
