Rocket zeroes in on title

Ronnie O'Sullivan was marching relentlessly towards his third Crucible title after extending his lead to 14-6 against outsider Ali Carter in the 888.com World Championship final.

The 'Rocket', already assured of being number one in the rankings next season, won three of the four frames before the mid-session interval in the best-of-35-frame encounter.

The 32-year-old would win with a session to spare if he succeeded in taking all four frames when the players returned to the table.

O'Sullivan started the session at odds of 1/200 to polish off Carter, who was appearing in his first ranking final.

What will be galling for Carter is that O'Sullivan failed to produce anything like the standard he showed in demolishing seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry in the semi-finals.

Carter will be massively disappointed to have failed to make the most of several decent opportunities that came his way over the first three sessions against a player who had won the eight previous meetings between the pair. But O'Sullivan again demonstrated his 'B' game is too strong for most of his opponents.

It looked like a match too far for Carter, who appeared to have little left in his tank to mount any sort of comeback at the end of a gruelling 17 days.

The 28-year-old from Tiptree looked disconsolate as he sat in his chair in the auditorium and he needed a miracle to take the title.

Carter was first amongst the balls in frame 17 with a run of 40 but then he missed a red into the middle and O'Sullivan cleared up with a 52. Carter, rated at 20/1 at the start of the day to win the title, failed to pot a ball in the next as breaks of 45 and 29 proved sufficient for O'Sullivan to move 13-5 ahead.

At last, Carter had something to smile about in the next with the aid of a 46 break. But he jawed a red in the final session before the interval and O'Sullivan cashed in with a 71 to leave him needing snookers.
