The American is far from at home on clay and it showed as he slipped to a 3-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 defeat on the Suzanne Lenglen court.
Andreev has some pedigree - he was the last person to beat Rafael Nadal on the dirt, in April 2005, before Roger Federer defeated the Spaniard two weekends ago at the Masters event in Hamburg.
World number one Federer overcame Michael Russell in straight sets to secure a second-round date with France's Thierry Ascione.
The Swiss star had opened up a 6-4 4-1 lead on Monday when play was suspended because of rain. Resuming on a sun-kissed Philippe Chatrier court, Federer closed out an impressive 6-4 6-2 6-4 triumph.
Home favourite Ascione is next up for the top seed after he routed qualifier Marin Cilic in straight sets.
Fernando Gonzalez, the fifth seed, was another major name to tumble on Tuesday after he was routed 6-2 6-2 6-4 by Radek Stepanek, the Czech Republic player who is attempting to make his way back into the top echelons after a long spell out through injury.
Elsewhere, Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic, looking to at least repeat his heroics of last year when he made the semi-finals, sealed a 6-1 7-5 7-6 (7/2) win over Frenchman Arnaud Clement. Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, one of the dark horses this year, was particularly impressive in dismantling Max Mirnyi 6-3 6-1 6-3 on Court 2.
Meanwhile, Mikhail Youzhny, the 13th seed, was handed a walk-over victory against Jan Hernych, who lasted just nine points before retiring with a back injury.
2003 French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero lost the first set in his clash with American Amer Delic before rallying to claim a 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory. And it was much the same for 18th seed Juan Ignacio Chela as he also lost the first set against Fabrice Santoro only to recover to win 6-7 (5/7) 6-0 6-3 6-3.
