Roddick makes round three

Third seed Andy Roddick moved into round three at Wimbledon with a straight-sets win over Danai Udomchoke on Centre Court.

The big-serving American rattled through the opening exchanges, to lead two sets to love in just over 50 minutes.

However, in the third set, the two-time Wimbledon runner-up was pushed hard by the world number 114 from Thailand but Roddick's experience saw him through 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3) after the best part of a two-hour workout following a delayed start because of rain.

Big-hitting Roddick, who won the Artois Championship at Queen's, held his next serve to love after a break and moved 4-1 ahead in just 13 minutes.

Roddick soon closed out the set, 6-3, in 28 minutes, having survived another break chance.

A slack forehand from the Thai player in game five of the second set gifted Roddick two break points, which he coolly dispatched at the first opportunity to move 3-2 ahead.

Roddick, 24, soon had the chance to serve for the set - which he clinched 6-4 with an overhead volley.

Roddick finally put away a break chance with a fine cross-court shot from the baseline and despite looking in control with a 3-1 lead but a long return from Roddick gave Udomchoke a break chance in game eight, which the Thai player coolly converted with a passing shot to the corner and levelled at 4-4.

Udomchoke led 6-5, with Roddick this time remaining composed to ensure there would be a tie-break and the Thai player netted a backhand on his serve to give Roddick a mini-break at 2-3.

The world number three kept the pressure on to break again, before closing out 7-3 to secure safe passage into the third round.
