Ronaldo on target in United win

Cristiano Ronaldo marked his return to Manchester United's starting line-up with a goal as the Red Devils dumped Middlesbrough out of the Carling Cup with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo nodded home Ryan Giggs' corner midway through the first half, his first goal since an equally powerful header in the Champions League final last May.

Giggs and Nani struck late on to send United through after Adam Johnson had equalised, although Boro skipper Emanuel Pogatetz ended the game in disgrace, dismissed for an awful challenge on Rodrigo Possebon which saw the young Brazilian carried off on a stretcher.
