Hughes is fearful that once Jose Mourinho's side get in front, they usually go on and win the game.
"They are an exceptional side and, when they get noses in front, they do not usually give any opportunities for the opposition," said Hughes. "What marks them down as champions is their winning mentality. So we know it is going to be very difficult as they are very adept at protecting a lead and seeing the game through."
That mean streak was again evident in midweek when they overcame Valencia in the Champions League thanks to Michael Essien's late winner.
Hughes looked on in admiration at the way their semi-final opponents at Old Trafford achieved that victory in Spain.
He added: "Chelsea played exceptionally well against Valencia. To go there under difficult circumstances and qualify was fantastic for them.
"We have to start positively if we want to go on and win the game."
