Rovers win is a career high - Trollope

Bristol Rovers first-team coach Paul Trollope insisted steering his Coca-Cola League One side into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Southampton was up there with the best moments of his career.

The former Wales midfielder reached the last eight as a player in 1997 with Derby and saw his side earn him a second chance to reach the last four after Rickie Lambert's late deflected free-kick sealed a deserved win over an under-par Southampton.

Trollope said: "It's a big achievement to get into the quarter-finals."

"We were very pleased with the first half even if we didn't quite create the opportunities I would have liked," he added.

"We limited them to a few half-chances and defended as a team when we had to and got a bit of fortune at the end there."

Lambert was a constant thorn in the Saints' side and thought he had won the tie midway through the second half when he headed in a Stuart Campbell corner. But referee Mike Riley ruled the goal out for a push and Trollope admitted that he thought the decision was correct.

He said: "Rickie thought it was a goal but to be honest straight away I thought it was a push so I wasn't surprised. But the goal has to go to him. It was on target so it would be harsh to take it away from him."

Southampton joint caretaker manager Jason Dodd blasted his side after admitting that they "didn't turn up".

The Hampshire club never really looked like scoring on a terrible surface and Dodd conceded that the lack of character shown by his players was a concern.

He said: "For some reason we just didn't turn up which is worrying. We've been working hard but a few of them didn't perform out there and let themselves down as well as the fans."
