Ruiz row threatens Haye fight

David Haye's projected WBA heavyweight title challenge against Russian giant Nikolai Valuev is in danger of being scuppered by a protest from former champion John Ruiz.

Ruiz, who has already been beaten twice on points by Valuev in December 2005 and August last year, is again the mandatory challenger for a crack at Valuev's title and his team claim Valuev is obliged to make a mandatory defence of the title against the American before the end of August.

Ruiz's team said in a letter to the WBA: "John Ruiz will not sit by and permit another delay so Valuev can have another interim fight, especially against an opponent who is not even rated by the WBA."

The letter continued: "John Ruiz has not agreed to permit any bout for the WBA heavyweight championship unless he is one of the participants, and he will take any and all legal action necessary to protect his interests."

Haye, whose projected shot at Wladimir Klitschko fell through due to injury last month, claimed he had signed for a fight with Valuev, reportedly set to take place on November 7 in Germany.

Valuev's team believe they have already fulfilled their mandatory commitments by agreeing to face former champion Ruslan Chagaev. However that fight was cancelled when Chagaev was declared medically unfit.
