Rusedski forced to call it quits

Greg Rusedski has been forced to pull out of the final tournament of his career due to a neck and shoulder injury.

The 33-year-old former British number one announced his retirement two months ago but had already committed himself to play in the Liverpool International at Calderstones Park.

He was due to play Vince Spadea in the final game in Group B - effectively a semi-final - but was unable to play due to the problem he picked up in beating Lukas Lacko on Friday.

"It's obviously disappointing but these freak things do happen once in a while and I've done this to my neck before," said Rusedski.

"I'm disappointed I couldn't play but people have been very considerate about the situation. It's just unfortunate.

"I've just got to take it easy and get treatment. I'm not too worried about it because it's not like I'm in a rush to get back playing any time soon.

"There's no point in going out there if you're not 100 per cent but at least I had a word with the crowd and signed as many autographs as I could.

"I wanted to play but it just wasn't right. Unfortunately that's the way it goes sometimes."
