Saints crush Dragons

St Helens made a timely return to form to maintain their grip on the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a clinical 42-8 destruction of Catalans Dragons in a one-sided fifth-round tie at Knowsley Road.

Francis Meli, Paul Wellens and Gary Wheeler all scored two tries apiece in a 17th successive Challenge Cup victory which takes Saints to within two games of a fourth successive final appearance.

The Super League leaders were still not at their best but their eight-try success will send spirits soaring after their crushing defeats by Bradford and Wigan.

Meanwhile, Salford cruised into the quarter-finals as they thrashed Co-operative Championship bottom club Batley 66-4 at Mount Pleasant.

Debutant Richie Mathers and the prolific Chris Hicks grabbed two tries apiece as Warrington beat Featherstone 56-8 to ease into the last eight.

Hull Kingston Rovers needed a last-minute try from Ben Fisher to clinch a hard-fought 34-24 victory over a spirited Sheffield Eagles and book their place.

And hooker Shaun Lunt scored a hat-trick as Huddersfield eased through with a 38-12 victory over gallant part-timers Rochdale.

Gateshead Thunder have landed a plum home tie with holders St Helens.

The Co-operative Championship club, who have never previously been past the fourth round, booked their place in the last eight with a 34-16 fourth-round win over Oldham.

In the other ties, Wigan have been drawn at home to Salford, Castleford visit Huddersfield and Hull KR have home advantage against Warrington. The ties will take place on the weekend of May 29-31.
