Saints fight back for victory

Super League leaders St Helens came from 10-0 down to snatch a face-saving 12-10 victory over a virtual reserve Huddersfield side and stay top of the table.

Saints were staring at a third consecutive defeat after Wembley-bound Huddersfield scored two tries in the first eight minutes, but winger Francis Meli came to their rescue with a 64th-minute try that edged them in front for the first time.

With an eye on next Saturday's Wembley showdown with Warrington, the Giants left out 11 members of the side that knocked Mick Potter's team out of the Challenge Cup a fortnight ago, but the gamble looked to have paid off as they led 10-4 at half-time.

Hull KR maintained their timely run of form as they held off brave Salford 14-10 to clinch a fourth straight win.

An entertaining first half was dominated by solid defence from both sides before Clint Newton broke the deadlock with a 36th-minute try.

Salford drew level after Adam Sidlow's 48th-minute try but Michael Dobson's 55th-minute penalty edged Rovers back in front before Shaun Briscoe crossed late on. Stefan Ratchford claimed a consolation at the death but that could not halt Rovers' charge into the Super League play-offs.

Craig Hall scored a hat-trick as Hull recovered some of their lost pride to put a serious dent in Harlequins' play-off ambitions with a convincing 26-6 win at the KC Stadium.

Having been branded as 'amateur' by captain Lee Radford in the build-up to the game following the end of their own play-off hopes last weekend, Hull's players responded in the best possible way as they cruised to their biggest win of the season.

Wakefield made sure of their engage Super League play-off place with a superb 40-28 victory in a pulsating engage Super League match at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Seven tries and six goals gave the Wildcats their triumph, and effectively ended any remaining hopes the Wolves had of making the final eight. The Wolves responded with five tries and four goals of their own but John Kear's men always had too much for their opponents.
