Saints fined £22,000

St Helens have been fined £22,000 after being found guilty of breaching the Super League salary cap during their championship-winning season.

Saints avoided a points deduction after an independent three-man panel ruled they were guilty of a minor breach.

They imposed a fined of £18,000, plus £4,000 which was suspended from last year, when they were also punished for over-spending on players' wages.

It is thought St Helens went over the cap because of bonuses paid to Ade Gardner and James Graham when they made their Great Britain debuts in the hastily-arranged mid-season Test match against New Zealand.

A club spokesman said: "St Helens agree with and accept the penalty of a £22,000 fine for breach of the salary cap in season 2006."
