The veteran hooker will be given until just before kick-off at Warrington on Sunday to prove he has overcome a knee injury in order to lead the holders out against Huddersfield in the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final.
Although Saints could have back-up hooker James Roby back from a broken hand, coach Mick Potter knows the importance of Cunningham to his side and will give him every chance to make the team sheet.
"He's a very important member of the team," said Potter. "He's been very good all season but he seems to be hitting a purple patch for us at the moment.
"We just need to nurse him through to see how he pulls up."
Saints, the Super League leaders, are favourites to extend their impressive record in rugby league's famous knockout competition.
It is more than four years since they last experienced defeat - victory over the Giants would extend their winning sequence to 19 consecutive ties - and their captain insists the hunger is as strong as ever.
"You get addicted to winning," said Cunningham, who has appeared in eight finals going back to 1996 and been a winner in all but one of them.
"It's like a drug, you just want more and more of it and every time you taste success and the glory of walking out and doing the lap of honour, you just want to do that every year."
