Samuels banned for suspect action

The International Cricket Council have banned West Indies spinner Marlon Samuels from bowling in international cricket pending further assessment of his action.

An initial examination of Samuels' action, carried out by Dr Mark King, a member of the ICC Panel of Human Movement Specialists, revealed his off-break and fast deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under regulations.

The analysis showed Samuels' average elbow flexion/extension angle for an off-break delivery was 27 degrees while for his faster delivery it was 35 degrees.

The case was brought to the ICC's attention after the 27-year-old was reported for a suspect action by the umpires in the third Test between South Africa and West Indies in Durban in January.

An injury to Dwayne Bravo and the absence of Chris Gayle meant Samuels, a part-time off-spin bowler, sent down 21 overs in South Africa's only innings of the game.

On-field umpires Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar and third umpire Brian Jerling reported their doubts over his action, especially with respect to his "fast" deliveries.

The suspension applies with immediate effect although Samuels does have the right to appeal.
