Sanchez runs risk of FA rap

Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez may face a rap from the Football Association after branding referees "not up to the job".

Sanchez' outburst came on Wednesday night after Kent official Steve Bennett disallowed a Diomansy Kamara 'goal' when the London team were level at 1-1 in extra time with Carling Cup rivals Bolton - in a match they eventually lost 2-1.

Former Northern Ireland boss Sanchez raged: "These referees are just not up to it, and something has to be done. They are costing us week-in, week-out with their decisions. I don't know whether they think they are coming to little Fulham just to enjoy a nice outing - but I think it is ridiculous what they are doing."

Sanchez has bitter experience of controversial decisions this season - David Healy's disallowed last-gasp equaliser against Middlesbrough last month which TV replays proved erroneous and a handball in the area not given in a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa.

Kamara put the ball in the net against Bolton after Healy's shot came back off a post. But he was ruled offside - before Stelios Giannakopoulos grabbed a 112th-minute winner, despite appearing to shove Fulham's Paul Konchesky off the ball.

Sanchez's team beat a full-strength Bolton side 2-1 in the Barclays Premier League six weeks ago - for their only three points pick-up so far this season - but this time they crashed out against Sammy Lee's significantly under-strength strugglers.

Lee left out the likes of Nicolas Anelka, El Hadji Diouf, Jussi Jaaskelainen and Kevin Nolan - handing out four debuts - but the visitors led from the 57th minute when on-loan midfielder Danny Guthrie powered home from 25 yards.

Healy, on as a substitute in the 72nd minute, levelled six minutes later with a shot which only just crossed the line. But Giannakopoulos came on for his first appearance of the season after a hernia operation and snatched the third-round victory with eight minutes of extra time left.

Lee said: "I picked a team I thought would win the match. Sure, I know I'm under pressure - but most managers are. This will result will give everybody at the club a boost for Saturday's game at Derby.

"Stelios has a nice habit of scoring important goals - and that was great for all of us."
