Asked if they are favourites, he said: "No. We have many, many games to go. We have won one game. If this game had been game 35 or game 36 and we were three points or six points in front, okay."

With Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien, Joe Cole and Didier Drogba all sidelined, the Brazilian turned to the likes of Carlo Cudicini, Wayne Bridge and the hugely impressive Juliano Belletti, and was richly rewarded.

He added: "We need to play every game as if it was our last game for the season to arrive at the final one with maybe one or two teams in the same condition. That's what I want.

"I don't think about Manchester United, Arsenal or Liverpool, I think about my team.

"I only want to win the games. I am not really looking at the other teams because my job is Chelsea."

The South American's satisfaction was in stark contrast, however, to the mood of opposite number Gareth Southgate, who admitted his side had simply not been at the races.

"It's a humiliation. You lose at home and it is hard to take," said Southgate. "But when you are beaten like that, it is a very humbling experience for all of us.

"There's a danger when you play a side of Chelsea's class that that can happen, but I don't think they had to be at their best, and yet they annihilated us."
