Scotland out despite first win

Oliver Wilkes' late try saw Scotland record an historic first World Cup win, but an 18-16 success against Fiji was not enough to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

Steve McCormack's side needed to win by 28 points to progress to the semi-final qualifier against Ireland on Monday.

But although they rarely threatened to achieve that, they can still draw immense pride from a gutsy display against Fiji, who now go forward to face the Irish.

The Scots led 12-4 at half-time, but with Jarryd Hayne outstanding at full-back, Fiji hit back to draw level going into the closing stages.

A second try from Bradford winger Semi Tadulala then looked to have sealed it for the Fijians, only for Wilkes to plunge over and draw the teams level again.

Scottish captain Danny Brough calmly slotted the conversion to create history for McCormack's men.
