Scots drop three

Scotland have fallen three places in the FIFA rankings following last month's defeat by Italy.

Alex McLeish began his reign with the Scots in a record 16th position in the list following Walter Smith's successful period in charge.

The new manager's first game saw Scotland hold on to top spot in their Euro 2008 qualifying group with a 2-1 home win over Georgia. But a 2-0 defeat in Bari four days later was enough to move the Scots down to 19th and put world champions Italy back on top of the list ahead of Argentina.

Mexico, Russia, Cameroon and Turkey leapfrog Scotland in the rankings, while Sweden fall nine places to 24th.

England fall two places to eighth following their draw in Israel while the Republic of Ireland climb 20 places to 31st following victories over Wales and Slovakia.

Northern Ireland are only two behind them, jumping from 47th after topping their qualifying group with wins over Liechtenstein and the Swedes.

Their 33rd place equals their best performance in the table, last achieved in 1994.

Wales climb three spots to 74th after following their defeat in Dublin with a win over San Marino.
