Scots too strong for Ireland

Scotland ended their dismal losing sequence against Ireland with a 31-21 win at Murrayfield.

The home side had lost their last seven encounters against Ireland but, with coach Frank Hadden fielding virtually a full-strength team, they were sharper and more enthusiastic in this World Cup warm-up.

Ally Hogg, Euan Murray and Andrew Henderson - with a hat-trick - touched down for the Scots, while Isaac Boss and Andrew Trimble replied for the visitors.

Scotland coach Frank Hadden said: "I said before the game it was important to generate a bit of momentum going into the World Cup and to make sure we got off to a winning start, so obviously we are delighted with that.

"I said to the players that I wanted to see the enthusiasm, energy and intensity we have seen in our preparations evident on the pitch, and I think there's absolutely no doubt that we saw that as well."
