Senior may be tempted out of retirement

Leeds centre Keith Senior is prepared to answer a call from England coach Tony Smith for the Gillette Four Nations series.

The veteran threequarter retired from the international game after last November's World Cup semi-final but, at 33, is playing as well as ever - a point illustrated by his selection for the 2009 Super League Dream Team.

Smith will consider his selections from Leeds and St Helens after Saturday's Grand Final, but Senior admits he could be tempted back on to the international scene, saying: "It's a tough question. I announced my retirement - and whether it's the right thing or wrong thing, that remains to be seen."

Senior added: "I've not had a phone call yet and I'm not expecting a phone call, so I'm not focusing too much on it.

"I've been enjoying my rugby. Leeds have shown a lot of loyalty to me, and it was time to pay them something back while I'm still playing some good rugby."

Smith on Tuesday added Wigan duo Sam Tomkins and Sean O'Loughlin to his train-on squad but left out experienced centre Martin Gleeson, who won 26 international caps and has been a regular in the national side over the last seven years.

Wakefield centre Ryan Atkins, who is joining Smith's Warrington club next season, took Senior's number four jersey for the mid-season international against France and would have been favourite to keep it for the Four Nations games against France, Australia and New Zealand.

But he made himself unavailable in order to undergo wrist surgery. With Hull centre Kirk Yeaman also sidelined through injury, Smith is short of options - although Michael Shenton (Castleford), Paul Sykes (Bradford) and Chris Bridge (Warrington) are in the current train-on squad.

Senior, who won 33 Great Britain caps going back to the 1996 tour and made 10 appearances for England, believes he is playing well enough to reclaim his place and admits he is still passionate about playing international rugby league.

"I know I could still play at international level," he said. "I know I could still do a job. I'd have to speak to my family and I'd definitely think about it very deeply. I'm a very proud man and I love pulling on an international shirt. You never say never, do you?"
