Setback for Hawkeye plans

The Premier League's hopes of introducing 'Hawkeye' technology to rule on goal-line controversies have been dealt a crushing blow by football's rulemakers.

The league had hoped to be given the green light to bring in the system from the 2009/10 season. But the International FA Board (IFAB) meeting in Gleneagles on Saturday ordered a freeze on goal-line technology trials and instead will push ahead with experiments with two extra assistant referees standing behind each goal-line.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick: "I think goal-line technology is now dead in the water and that is a disappointment to the FA, although we absolutely respect the democracy of the International FA Board."

The International FA Board is made up of the four home associations, who each have a vote, and FIFA who have four.

FIFA and the Football Association of Wales all voted to freeze trials of goal-line technology in favour of the extra referees plan put forward by UEFA president Michel Platini.

Premier League general secretary Mike Foster said: "The Premier League had wanted to have this in place for the 2009/10 season.

"The clubs had been driving this and they had been more anxious than anyone to have a system in place. The referees were all in favour as well."

The FAs of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland had all been in favour of continuing with trials of two goalline technology systems, one by 'Hawkeye' and another by adidas and Cairos Technologies which used a microchip in the ball.

Barwick added: "The FA have always been in the vanguard of wanting to help referees make the right decision, so we are disappointed that the goalline technology has been shelved."
