SFA seek end to 'self-interest'

SFA president George Peat believes there must be greater unity between his organisation, the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League.
Peat told The Herald: "I have asked myself, 'Do we need three governing bodies?'."
Peat plans to establish a series of independently-chaired meetings, beginning inside the next fortnight, to discuss the relationship between the three organisations.
He insisted the legal dispute between the SPL and SFL over the proposed formation of a second Premier division was not behind the plan, adding: "I wanted to introduce this before SPL 2 was ratified or otherwise.
"I said to (SPL executive chairman) Lex Gold that if I brought this out after it had been agreed, people would say I am just trying to stop SPL 2. That is not the case. I want this to be an open agenda, not what I think should happen."
Peat also wants a debate on a revamped league structure, with the possibility of adopting a pyramid system, as well as a discussion on the prospect of full-time referees and whether the compulsory retirement age of 47 should be increased.
As well as the SFA, SPL and SFL, Peat wants the Scottish Government, the Highland League and representatives of players, coaches and referees to be involved in any talks.
An SFA spokesman said: "It important to stress these are not firm proposals. They are just topics which are likely to be discussed when the group sits down."
