Shah enhances England chances
16 January 2008
Shah fired 116, with 16 fours and one six, in a first-day tally of 257 for five.
In the midlands derby, Worcestershire were bowled out 249 by rivals Warwickshire at Edgbaston, but the Bears struggled to 39 for three at the close.
Only Stephen Moore, with an unbeaten 109, distinguished himself as Neil Carter and Jonathan Trott took three wickets apiece.
Warwickshire did not look convincing in reply however and Simon Jones - on debut for Worcestershire as he attempts to rebuild his career following serious injury - took the wicket of Darren Maddy.
Northamptonshire were bowled out for 280 on day one against Essex at Chelmsford.
Lance Klusener (72 not out) led the way for the visitors while England all-rounder Ravi Bopara finished the day with three for 39. Essex were four without loss in reply at the close.
Gloucestershire skittled Derbyshire out for 124 at Bristol as Steve Kirby starred with the ball by taking four for 59.
The hosts were 216 for six in reply at stumps, with Marcus North weighing in with 87.
