Liverpool's shock home defeat at the hands of Marseille proved extremely costly after Porto snatched a last-gasp 1-0 win at Besiktas. The Portuguese giants climbed above the Reds into second place thanks to Ricardo Quaresma.
Marseille lead the group on six points, with Porto on four and Liverpool on just one ahead of what is now a crucial double-header against Besiktas.
Schalke benefited from Chelsea's 2-1 Group B victory at Valencia, with Jermaine Jones and Kevin Kuranyi scoring in a 2-0 win at Rosenborg.
Chelsea now lead the table on four points, a point ahead of both Valencia and Schalke, with Rosenborg on one point.
Goran Pandev and Ruud van Nistelrooy both helped themselves to a brace as Lazio twice came from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in Rome.
That was enough to see Real lose top spot in Group C on goal difference to Olympiacos, who won their first Champions League away match at the 32nd attempt.
They even came from behind to do it, going 1-0 down a Hugo Almeida goal at Werder Bremen before hitting back to win 3-1 thanks to Ieroklis Stoltidis, Christos Patsatzoglou and Darko Kovacevic. Olympiacos next face a daunting double-header against Real.
