"It's only going to get tougher from here, so I'm looking forward to the challenge," said Sharapova.
Fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 champion, was pushed hard by France's Camille Pin before closing out a 6-3 4-6 6-0 success.
"In the second set I missed so many chances," admitted Kuznetsova afterwards. "From that moment on I just started to turn it on and just play the right shots. But I'm not happy it went to the third set."
Another Russian, sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze, overcame Australia's Nicole Pratt 6-3 6-4, while 11th seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland defeated Severine Bremond of France 6-3 6-0.
Seventh seed Nadia Petrova secured a 7-5 6-1 win over fellow Russian Anastasia Rodionova, while Nicole Vaidisova was a straight-sets winner over Flavia Pennetta.
