Sharapova knocked out by Oudin

American teenager Melanie Oudin knocked out former champion Maria Sharapova to continue her amazing run at the US Open.

The 17-year-old from Georgia gave an impressive account of herself at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round, and she has repeated that achievement in New York by eliminating two of the biggest names in the game.

In the second round she beat fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva, and Dementieva's fellow Russian Sharapova was out-hustled by Oudin.

Sharapova, the 2006 champion, looked on course to end Oudin's Flushing Meadows campaign when she took the first set, however her opponent hit back superbly to win the match 3-6 6-4 7-5 in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Oudin had started her tournament with an easy win against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and her run of facing Russian players will extend into the fourth round, where Nadia Petrova, the 13th seed, awaits her.

Petrova secured a 6-4 6-1 win against Jie Zheng of China.
