Shearer: Ronaldo could match Pele

Alan Shearer believes Cristiano Ronaldo could become as revered as football legend Pele.

But he warns that fans should not expect too much from the Manchester United winger, who scored a phenomenal 42 goals this season, when the European Championships kick off this weekend.

Shearer says: "He has the potential (to be another Pele). He has the ability, no doubt about that. He's at the best club to sustain it. But he's with Portugal whereas Pele was at Brazil and Maradona at Argentina. Whether Portugal have got the team, I don't know."

Ronaldo's preparations have been disrupted by constant speculation that he might leave United for Real Madrid with reports suggesting a five-year £75million contract is on the table.

And Shearer added: "I hope there is not too much fatigue because there has been so much pressure put on him and rightly so by United this season. In every game he has come up with the goods.

"I just hope he is not too fatigued and does not disappoint.

"He won't have as many great players around him with Portugal as he does with Manchester United but the pressure will be exactly the same with Portugal."
