Sidebottom lifts England
23 January 2008
After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, New Zealand openers Jamie How and Aaron Redmond shared an 80-run stand.
But in the final five overs before lunch, left-arm seamer Sidebottom struck twice in successive overs to remove Redmond and James Marshall and leave the tourists on 92 for two.
How hit James Anderson for boundaries in three of his first four overs from the Stretford End, prompting captain Michael Vaughan to withdraw the Burnley-born seamer from the attack after he conceded 23 runs in his opening four-over spell.
Vaughan opted to bring Monty Panesar on at the same end where Jim Laker claimed his historic 19-wicket haul against Australia in 1956, and straight away he worried New Zealand's openers with a full-length delivery which turned sharply outside the off-stump.
Panesar was also unfortunate in his fifth over of the session when Redmond, then on 21, attempted a slog-sweep which flew high in the air but just evaded Stuart Broad's diving catch at mid-on.
Vaughan, now desperate for a breakthrough, turned to Sidebottom - his most successful bowler in the last year - and asked him to bowl from the Stretford End.
He struck in his third over back when Redmond left a full-length delivery which clipped the off-stump.
Sidebottom claimed another wicket in his next over when he trapped Marshall leg before, but How finished the session unbeaten on 58.
